Kegging Beer 1

 Kegging Beer 1

Tuesday 23, September, 2025

I've looked at Kegging beer in the past & it just looks expensive and complicated, so stuck with bottling beers.

Revisiting  Kegging beer , need corny keg, would prefer a 25l one but standard is a 19l one. Then need to do CO2 pressure but can do from SodaStream CO2 bottle, and then need outlet tap. At this time possibility of about $200 initial investment.

With Corny Keg Will still need to bottle the last 4l , about 12 bottles, but will save cleaning up 72 bottles at a time and should speed up bottling and carbonation.

Also storage of a couple of kegs should be in smaller space than the 2 containers with all the bottles.

Will need a 2nd set for the 2 batches, as you still need to allow CO2 to get into beer, a few days at least.

Will think about it as expensive month, but maybe for Christmas.

I think strategy at this time is to look out for 25l Kegs, then a keg can manage the whole batch. I'd need an adaptor to change it from commercial head to remove central post to homebrew head with corny keg valves.

So first get kegs, hopefully 25l ones, then get:

  •  modified head fitting, then get
  •  sodasteam CO2 regulator connector with guage
  •  'Kegland NukaTap Mini FC Disconnect Kit Household Brewing Faucet'

I'm keeping an eye out for 25l kegs on trademe at the moment. See how that goes.

This will mean I can keg warm beer, and if I want to chill keg later, I'll need to invest in a fridge of some sort, but one step at a time.

Auction last night for 25l keg. I won auction at $40/keg and asked for 2 of them, delivery to be $20 each. So all up $120$.

The corny kegs at 19l were advertised on TradeMe at $85 (Otago) and 99$ + delivery  so to get 2 for 120$ is OK. This doesn't have the valves at the head, and I need to remove existing valves from kegs so not a direct comparison, but they are more suitable for me as I'd require 2 x corny kegs + 2 x 4l kegs or still have to bottle 12 beers at each brew.

But $60 for 25l keg +

So, after delivery, next investment is the valve adaptor head  & Sodastream co2 regulator & dispensing tap.

  •  modified head fitting, t$73 inc Delivery at Beer Luv
  •  sodasteam CO2 regulator connector with guage - TradeMe 90+8 PP
  •  'Kegland NukaTap Mini FC Disconnect Kit Household Brewing Faucet'

I decided to go ahead and order the other items listed above and costs:

  •  modified head fitting, -AliE   $65.77
  •  sodasteam CO2 regulator connector with guage - TradeMe 97.25
  •  'Kegland NukaTap Mini FC Disconnect Kit Household Brewing Faucet'  - AliE- $38.19
  • I also bought Silicone hose 5mm dia & extra keg clamp and seal 5.13 + 3.843.84

So total outlay to date is $330.18 including Kegs.

Seems a lot, and there is extra head I will need to purchase, another $66 for 2nd Keg.

So this is just for saving time washing bottles and doing caps, is it worth it?

I'm not sure, see how it goes, there is a bit of learning in the process and getting rid of all the bottles and just having a couple of kegs. Also means I have to pour from keg rather than bottle, so will need to suck it and see.

A couple of weeks for all the bits to get here, so I think next brew will be bottled.
